Fight and Flight (Out of Orbit #2) by Chele Cooke

(Spoilers for Out of Orbit Book 1)

Synopsis from Goodreads

Georgianna Lennox is now a slave, serving an Adveni master and caught in the middle of a brewing war between oppressors and insurgents.

As the rebels increase their attacks against the Adveni, Georgianna is recruited as their eyes behind enemy lines.

But the lies she is forced to tell her owner are nothing compared to the secrets she must keep from her friends.

Secrets that could change the war in their favour, and lies that might destroy them all.

4 Star Review

After such a dramatic end to the first book I just had to keep reading this series. I spent most of the prologue trying to work out who was talking but the convocation was useful reminder of the situation that the first book left us in (as if you could forget). The first few chapters explored one of my favourite situations to read about – a female imprisoned – I always find it intriguing to see how they cope with the brutality of prison and often –as in this book- surrounded by male criminals. These first chapters remind us of Georgianna stubborn side as well as her vulnerabilities.

I felt as though the first half of this book was character driven we get to see more of the motives, personalities and history of various characters. Edtroka’s character fascinated me in the first book and I am so glad that we get to read more about him in this book. Originally as Georgianna spends more time with him in this book he seem to have two sides to his personality firstly the distant and sometime mean side where he treats Georgianna like she is nothing to him, and the other side where he is kind and almost friendly towards her.  By the end of the book as we are learn more about Edtroka’s ambitions the switch of moods does make more sense, and I think that Georgianna deals with the mood swings very well while she is kept in the dark about these goals. Kieran has always been another character with unclear motives and in the first half of the book his character becomes even more mysterious and motive even more confusing.  With so many secrets and mysterious happenings it is no surprise that Georgianna has to tell lies and guard secrets, as well as wonder and worry over who to trust.

The second half of this book is full of fights and action, deaths and running for their lives. There were tenses moments I wasn’t sure who would live and who would be captured. I am glad that by the end Georgianna has what I hope will be a friend – one that hopefully isn’t a possible love interest – and she can finally have someone to talk. We get another dramatic ending which once again leaves you wanting more.

Tis the Season Book Tag

ONE WEEK LEFT TILL CHRISTMAS!!

So I thought I would do a Christmas related book tag;Tis the Season Book Tag was make last year by RichardDenney over on YouTube and have recently watched a few people do this tag so thought I would give it a go. I feel as though over the last few months I haven't really been blogging that much so I can't wait to talk/share books with you all. So we have 7 (quite easy) Questions to get through so let get started:

1. Do you have a favourite Winter read?

In short no. I read about all these people who change their reading list to fit the season but when I have tried to do this I haven't kept to it (also one of the reasons I haven't done TBR posts yet) so I don't have a favourite book to read  in winter I just read what I fancy at that time.

2. Find a book with blue on the cover!

So this was very easy and yet quite hard. I have so many blue books on my shelves but I have chosen Bitterblue by Kristen Cashore and this is purely because the cover is blue and has these snow coverd mountains in the background and moody clouds, I have to say that I wasn't impressed by the actual story in this book, I loved Graceling which is the first book in the series but the cover is green so I couldn't choose that one.

3. Find a book you’d use as the star on a Christmas tree?

For this one I would have to choose Winter by Marissa Meyer the fourth and last book in the Lunar Chronicles. I chose this because firstly its called winter could your think anything more appropriate? Also the cover is so pretty although I am not sure that it would stay on the tree considering it's size!!

4. Pick one fictional place that would be perfect for a Winter vacation!

I feel as though everyone has used Hogwarts as their answer for this question but I have to agree with them. Hogwarts is portrayed as so pretty in the Films during the Christmas scenes that is defiantly were I would want to be.

5. Pick one fictional character you’d take with you on your Winter vacation!

I would want someone who was fun to be around who was sarcastic and knew how to party but could also be serious when I needed them to be... Jace from the Mortal Instruments series? OH NO wait..Thorne from the Lunar Chronicles! Yes Thorne would be perfect though I fear for all the ladies, I can just see him hang out around the mistletoe!

 6. Name one book on your Wishlist this year!

Snow Like Ashes by

7. Favourite Holiday drink, treat, & movie?

Favourite drink? Well I love Hot Chocolate all year round but I often drink it more as the weather get colder but for my Christmas drink I would have to choose Mulled Wine, it just lovely and for the last few year I have managed to get mum to make us some.

Favourite treat? Well I like my homemade mince pies but not the shop bought ones so I can't say that I like all mice pies. However I adore chocolate log I can't make this myself (believe me I have tried!) and all the bought ones I have tried have all been delicious!

Favourite Christmas movie? I have yet to find a great Christmas film! Every year me and my family watch some version of the Christmas Carol (my favourite version is the muppets Christmas carol) and also Miracle on 34th Street. This year we have actually bought a load of new (to us) Christmas films to try out including Elf which I can't remember the last time I watched (so it much have been quite a few years ago.) So I am hoping to find my favourite holiday film soon.

Well that's for this tag I hope you enjoyed it, if you haven't done this tag before I am now tagging you, go and get into the Christmas Spirit!!

Arcadia Awakens (Arkadien #1) by Kai Meyer

Synopsis From Goodreads

To New Yorker Rosa Alcantara, the exotic world of Sicily, with its network of Mafia families and its reputation for murder and intrigue, is just that—exotic, and wholly unknown. But when tragedy strikes, she must travel there, to her family’s ancestral home, where her sister and aunt have built their lives and where centuries of family secrets await her. Once there, Rosa wastes no time falling head over heels for Alessandro Carnevare, the son of a Sicilian Mafia family, whose handsome looks and savage grace both intrigue and unsettle her. But their families are sworn enemies, and her aunt and sister believe Alessandro is only using Rosa to infiltrate the Alcantara clan. And when Rosa encounters a tiger one night—a tiger with very familiar eyes—she can no longer deny that neither the Carnevares nor the Alcantaras are what they seem.

Ancient myths brought to life in the Sicilian countryside, dangerous beasts roaming the hills, and a long history of familial bloodlust prove to Rosa that she can’t trust anyone—not even her own family. Torn between loyalty to her aunt and love for her family’s mortal enemy, Rosa must make the hardest decision of her life: stay in Sicily with her new love . . . or run as far and as fast as she can.

5 Star Review

I heard about this book in one of Benjaminoftomes YouTube video's and thought it sounded interesting. I love the idea of female protagonists within a mafia setting. I have read a few series around this subject but none of them had the supernatural twist that this series has.

I really enjoyed the way in which this book started, the 'My Death' song was a ominous beginning you really begin to notice that Rose is not entirely normal when she starts explaining about her staple gun. It really fascinated me trying to work out what involvement she had in the mafia within these first few chapters. By the end of the first chapter or two I had some many unanswered questions that I just had to keep reading.

I enjoyed reading Kai and Rose relationship grow as they spend time together. I also liked some of the more secondary characters I especially liked  Fundling he seems to be one of those reserved but dangerous characters.

I don't want to give too much away as this book is just AMAZING if you start without know much about it. I will say that there is a lot of action, deaths I didn't see coming and surprise histories all within an ever growing web of lies, mystery, suprise alliances and mafia secrets.

She’s more gunpowder than girl—and the fate of the desert lies in her hands.

Mortals rule the desert nation of Miraji, but mystical beasts still roam the wild and barren wastes, and rumor has it that somewhere, djinni still practice their magic. But there's nothing mystical or magical about Dustwalk, the dead-end town that Amani can't wait to escape from.

Destined to wind up "wed or dead," Amani’s counting on her sharpshooting skills to get her out of Dustwalk. When she meets Jin, a mysterious and devastatingly handsome foreigner, in a shooting contest, she figures he’s the perfect escape route. But in all her years spent dreaming of leaving home, she never imagined she'd gallop away on a mythical horse, fleeing the murderous Sultan's army, with a fugitive who's wanted for treason. And she'd never have predicted she'd fall in love with him...or that he'd help her unlock the powerful truth of who she really is.

Why I am Waiting

Fugitive female protagonist in a world with magic, western feel, handsome foreigner and romance!  Amazing cover to top it off? Who could as for more? This book sound actioned packed and I hope it lives up to the high expectations I have for it.

Clariel by Garth Nix

Add on Goodreads

Synopsis from Goodreads

Sixteen-year-old Clariel is not adjusting well to her new life in the city of Belisaere, the capital of the Old Kingdom. She misses roaming freely within the forests of Estwael, and she feels trapped within the stone city walls. And in Belisaere she is forced to follow the plans, plots and demands of everyone, from her parents to her maid, to the sinister Guildmaster Kilp. Clariel can see her freedom slipping away. It seems too that the city itself is descending into chaos, as the ancient rules binding Abhorsen, King and Clayr appear to be disintegrating.

With the discovery of a dangerous Free Magic creature loose in the city, Clariel is given the chance both to prove her worth and make her escape. But events spin rapidly out of control. Clariel finds herself more trapped than ever, until help comes from an unlikely source. But the help comes at a terrible cost. Clariel must question the motivations and secret hearts of everyone around her - and it is herself she must question most of all.

4 Star Review

I was in two minds about picking up this book, I had loved Sabriel however not enjoyed the sequels to it. It has also been many, many years since I read these books. However I decided I would give Clariel a try since it was a prequel focused on completely different characters.

It was refreshing to read a YA book in which the main character wasn't focused on romance! As it had been so long since I had read any of the book set in this world it took me a little while to get my head around the magic system again. Clariel as a character was very interesting and it was great reading about her internal struggle, both with rage and magic. it was also great to see Bel grow into his role though the story his drive to see change and his willingness to chase after it, doing what needed to be done.

I was slightly surprised at how long it took for the dragon to appear in this book, I thought that since it was on the cover the dragon would play a bigger role than it did. I did however liked that we got to see some of the places I vaguely remember from the trilogy like the island house. Overall, a enjoyable book which was much better in my opinion than the Sabriel sequels and maybe even on par with Sabriel? Maybe ...

Sonya was born with the rare gift to feel what those around her feel—both physically and emotionally—a gift she’s kept hidden from the empire for seventeen long years. After a reckless mistake wipes out all the other girls with similar abilities, Sonya is hauled off to the palace and forced to serve the emperor as his sovereign Auraseer.

Tasked with sensing the intentions of would-be assassins, Sonya is under constant pressure to protect the emperor. One mistake, one small failure, will cost her own life and the lives of the few people left in the world who still trust her.

But Sonya’s power is untamed and reckless, her feelings easily usurped, and she sometimes can’t decipher when other people’s impulses end and her own begin. In a palace full of warring emotions and looming darkness, Sonya fears that the biggest danger to the empire may be herself.

As she struggles to wrangle her abilities, Sonya seeks refuge in her tenuous alliances with the volatile Emperor Valko and his idealistic younger brother, Anton, the crown prince. But when threats of revolution pit the two brothers against each other, Sonya must choose which brother to trust—and which to betray.

Why I am Waiting

Another great sounding fantasy book! This burb just ooze's tension the main character is obviously fearing for her life, and the suggestion of  a revolution tells me there is going to be a wider issues in the empire. Is there also going to be a bit of romance between Sonya and one of the crown princes maybe? I also can't wait to know more about her powers and the issues and advantages it will cause her.

With everything around her changing, Finn is the only person she can trust. But dark forces are conspiring -- not only to separate them, but to see the downfall of everything that Wendy cares about...

Review

This book is one of those that I have had on my TBR shelf for what feels like an age, I kept putting off reading it as it sounded the same as so many other books I have read. It did start the same way but we quickly moved away for the 'normal' storyline.

The book opens with quite a dramatic prologue which leaves us with many, many questions that don't get answered for quite a while. I liked that the we get told about Wendy's power so quickly and straight forwardly, however there are many other things which remain mysterious throughout the book. This mystery and secrecy allows for some many a surprise revelations as Wendy is often kept in the dark about what is happening around her.

I liked Wendy's character and I enjoyed her progression into a stronger person (especially in the rest of this trilogy) but she did do a few things that made me think 'really, that is kinda stupid'. There seemed to quite a few potential guys for Wendy's romance and I admit that they all seemed nice. I love a good forbidden romance but also liked Tove's caring character. The Queen in this book was so cold, I can't really understand her at this point and I hope in the following books we get to know more about her.

I felt as a reader that the ending of this book was rushed, and the book was also left after one of Wendy 'stupid' decisions where she hasn't really thought through the consequences of what she is doing but this does mean we are left on a cliff hanger so book two is now needed.

Overall, I enjoyed reading this it was much better and more original than I was expecting when I started it.

Top Ten Tuesday - Book To Movie Adaptations I'm Looking Forward To

This Weeks Top Ten Tuesday is Top Ten Book To Movie Adaptations I'm Looking Forward To or Ten Book To Movie Adaptations I Still Need To Watch. So these five films and TV show have been released (or will be soon) and I want to watch but just haven't got around to watching yet.

These five books are ones that at some point or other have been optioned for TV, I know some of them are more likely to happen than others but I would love (and also be scared in case it's done badly) to see all these as a film or TV show.
  • Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi
  • Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard
  • Heist Society by Ally Carter
  • Throne of Glass by Sarah J.Maas
  • Fallen by Lauren Kate
So that's this weeks Top Ten Tuesday, I think out of those that have already been filmed Mockingjay and Shadowhunter are my Top two. I really hope I can get to the cinema the week that Mockingjay is released, watching Shadowhunter might be slightly harder as it's being shown on American TV but hopefully us British will be able to watch it some how.
